GoCounter – Count Your Customers App

The Idea Behind GoCounter – Count Your Customers

Not that long ago I had an idea to start small fast-food franchise in Varna. My mentor, a former boss of mine who is manager of fast-food restaurant for more than 10 years, suggested that I make a small marketing research about the number of customers that visit another fast-food restaurant of the same franchise chain. I needed not only the number but the their their age group as well. Then I had to do the same thing near the place where I wanted to start my restaurant at.

Being a technical guy I looked for a software solution that could help me achieve that task – searching the AppStore for an hour with no success an idea came to me to develop the software myself. I discussed what I needed with my girlfriend who used to do similar marketing researches back at university. I ‘wrote’ simple plan for the development and ran for it.

Developing GoCounter App

There were two very key points – building the app extremely fast (I needed the research asap) and second it had to be very simple (KISS – keep it simple stupid!).

Following the Objective C wave I created a new project in the XCode and started the hard work. The app uses CoreData and allows the user to create different campaigns and count customers in their age group. The app is built for both iPhone and iPad and is optimised for Retina displays.

GoCounter for Sale

In two weeks or so I managed to build the app and did my research – results showed that my idea is not worth it. I draw a simple icon for it and submitted it in the AppStore. At first I wanted to sell it for €0.89 ($0.99 respectively) and after a week of chatting with AppStore support team setting my bank account details the app was shipped in the store.

After a week with no sells I realised I had taken the wrong path and made a turn around – I released the app for free! There was a sudden result – in the first two days I got more than 70 downloads (which is good in my perspective). Now is the time to set the new monetization plan – in-app purchases for different statistic types. According to it By-day and By-hour statistics will be added in the near future.
